Perched on the slopes above the Sea of Galilee, the Switzerland Forest exemplifies the enduring bond between Switzerland and Israel. Thanks to the steadfast support of KKL-JNF Switzerland, this 3,000-dunam forest offers a haven of natural beauty, vital environmental protection, and recreation for the residents of Tiberias and hundreds of thousands of visitors annually.
Originally planted to prevent landslides, control runoff, and stabilize the soil, the forest has become a thriving ecosystem that safeguards the region from environmental hazards. Key initiatives like drainage systems and afforestation efforts ensure sustainability for generations to come
The forest boasts walking trails, bike routes, shaded picnic areas, and scenic lookouts, making it a source of recreation and community bonding. These features attract approximately 600,000 visitors every year, families and hikers.
The Arches Scenic Lookout: A Vision for Renewal
The Arches Scenic Lookout was originally built by KKL-JNF to provide travelers with a breathtaking view of the Sea of Galilee at the heart of the forest’s scenic route. Constructed about 20 years ago, the site has served visitors well but now requires maintenance and upgrades to ensure safety and optimal use.
Key features of the original construction included basalt rockeries that support the observation deck, basalt stone stairs and walls, decorative safety railings, an asphalt path, concrete benches, and a pergola providing much-needed shade. These elements create a space that blends seamlessly with the surrounding Galilee landscape while offering visitors a place to relax and enjoy the view.
The planned renewal will refresh and restore these features. Maintenance efforts will include repainting and refurbishing the existing structures, enhancing the pergola, and upgrading the flooring with basalt tuff for added durability and aesthetic appeal. Additionally, donor recognition elements will be integrated to honor those who contribute to this meaningful project.
