{"id":127,"date":"2024-01-18T07:36:46","date_gmt":"2024-01-18T07:36:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/git.quatro.digital\/clients\/kkl\/?post_type=community&#038;p=127"},"modified":"2024-02-08T11:59:55","modified_gmt":"2024-02-08T11:59:55","slug":"kibbutz-beeri","status":"publish","type":"community","link":"https:\/\/donate.kkl-jnf.org\/westernnegevtribute\/?community=kibbutz-beeri","title":{"rendered":"Be&#8217;eri"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Kibbutz<\/strong> Be&#8217;eri was named after Berel Katznelson, whose Hebrew name was Be&#8217;eri, one of the intellectual founders of\u00a0Labor Zionism, instrumental in the\u00a0establishment\u00a0of the modern state of\u00a0Israel, and the editor of\u00a0Davar, the first daily newspaper of the workers&#8217; movement.<\/p>\n<p>Be&#8217;eri is a strictly cooperative, economically prosperous kibbutz. There is no distribution of salaries to members, and the community takes care of the complete well-being of its members, though the dining room was privatized in 2022. In 2006, a synagogue was inaugurated in the kibbutz, at the initiative of some of the residents.<br \/>\nDuring the War of Independence (1948), the kibbutz was bombed by the Egyptian army, its buildings were destroyed, and the members spent the war period in bunkers and fighting in trenches. During Operation Protective Edge in the summer of 2014, a squad of nine terrorists infiltrated Israel through a tunnel, about 9 km from the kibbutz. The squad ambushed an IDF jeep, killing Major Amots Greenberg and the driver Adar Bresno, and returned to Gaza. In the spring of 2018, some 5 incendiary kites were launched daily from the Gaza Strip, which caused wildfires and damage.<\/p>\n<p>Following the fires, a &#8220;fire patrol&#8221; was established in the kibbutz, which was intended to try and prevent the fires from spreading. The kibbutz also suffered from shelling during each of the rounds of fighting between the Gaza Strip and Israel over the past 16 years.<br \/>\nThe residents are mostly farmers, growing wheat crops, potatoes, sunflowers, peanuts, watermelon seeds, jojoba and avocados). They also operate a bicycle center, &#8220;La-Medosh&#8221;, which dozens of cyclists from all over Israel come to for supplies and information on their way to enjoy the many KKL-JNF bike paths in the area.
